An old photograph of Binondo, with Hotel de Oriente in view at the far left. Hotel de Oriente was believed to be the first hotel in the Philippines, which opened in 1889. It was the Spanish architect Juan Jose Huervas y Arizmendi who designed the building. The hotel, which had 83 rooms, had a beautiful view of the whole plaza of Binondo. It was also famous for Room 22, the room Rizal took during his short stay in Manila, right after he got back from Hong Kong. During World War II, part of the building was destroyed. But it soon fell to disuse. Eventually it was demolished… to give way to a new edifice. A piece of history lost forever. Sigh.
